The five-day CITB SMSTS course is for site managers, supervisors and those stepping into leadership roles. Live Zoom training covers health, safety, welfare and environmental responsibilities, including risk management, legal compliance and leading construction teams.
The course is delivered over 5 days, running from 08:30 AM to 5:00 PM, via an interactive online platform. Participants can join from the comfort of their home or office while benefiting from real-time instructor support and group discussions.

Participants will engage in online activities, group exercises, and an end-of-course assessment. Successful completion earns the CITB SMSTS Certificate, valid for five years.
The cost is £380 ex VAT, which includes all course materials, assessments, and certification.

You join scheduled Zoom sessions with a trainer and other learners. If you prefer a classroom because you want to ask questions, hear explanations and discuss real situations, those opportunities are part of this live course. Set aside the training time and join from a suitable room at home or work.
Raise questions during the session and talk through anything you need explained. Your trainer leads the learning in real time.
Work through construction-site examples and discuss the course material with your trainer and the group. Connect the learning to the responsibilities you have at work.
You learn alongside the group on the published course dates. Plan time away from normal work so you can participate in the discussions, exercises and assessment.
Joining from home or work saves travel time. You can also avoid fares, mileage and any overnight accommodation that travelling to a classroom would require.
You’ll need to open course emails, follow the joining link and use your camera and microphone. If you are unsure about the technology or need learning support, contact our team before booking so you can discuss what you need.
Your Zoom link arrives two days before the course, or immediately if it starts within two days. Read the course details and complete the pre-course form before training. Have valid photographic ID ready.
Use your own laptop or desktop computer with a working webcam, microphone and audio, a reliable internet connection and a quiet space. A phone alone is not suitable.
Open the Zoom link in your joining email at the scheduled time. Follow the instructions to connect your camera and microphone, then learn with your trainer and the group. Attend the full course and complete its assessment requirements. Training runs over five days, 08:30–17:00.
After successfully completing your course, you will receive a certificate from CITB.

Take this full course if you are learning SMSTS for the first time or your previous certificate has expired. Holders of an in-date SMSTS certificate can consider the SMSTS Refresher.
There are no formal entry qualifications for SMSTS. You should hold, or be preparing for, a site-management role; previous health and safety knowledge is recommended. CITB recommends SSSTS first for people without health and safety management experience. You need written and spoken English suitable for the course.
You study legal and management responsibilities, health and welfare, general site safety and high-risk work. Topics include risk assessments, method statements, communication, working at height and controlling common construction hazards. Read the course content.
The course takes five days, with 37.5 hours of training and assessment, excluding breaks. You must attend the full course. Check your joining instructions for the schedule for your dates.
It is live, instructor-led training over Zoom. You join scheduled sessions with your trainer and other learners and take part throughout the course.
Yes. You can ask your trainer questions, discuss the course material with the group and work through practical examples. You can join from home or work without the journey or overnight stay that a training venue might involve.
Yes. CITB permits live remote delivery under its Site Safety Plus rules. You still need to meet the attendance, participation and assessment requirements for your course. See CITB’s current scheme rules.

Plan uninterrupted time for the scheduled training and assessment. You need to take part, rather than attend around normal duties. If you are late, lose your connection or cannot attend, contact the team promptly to discuss what happens next. Do not assume a recording can replace attendance.
You complete four core exercises and must pass the trainer review before the final exam. The final exam has 25 questions, lasts 35 minutes and requires 26 out of 32 marks (81%) to pass. It includes multiple-choice and written or multi-response questions.
You may use GE700 and XA6 during the final 15 minutes of the exam. Your trainer explains the assessment arrangements and permitted materials.
Resit eligibility depends on your result and the requirements in CITB’s current scheme rules. Contact the team about your options and any fee. A free resit is not assumed, and some results mean taking the course again.
The CITB SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. Complete the relevant refresher before it expires to keep it current; an expired certificate requires the full course again.
Your certificate is forwarded after CITB issues it. Ask our team for an update if you need one, and allow for processing when planning work or an employment start date.
The published price is £456 including VAT per person (£380 + VAT). The fee includes the course, materials, assessment and certification on successful completion.
